The first thing most of us look forward to when we hit our own bed at night is a plush pillow we can sink are heads into. But did you realize that the trusty pillow has been around for a very long time, and that it's evolved significantly over the centuries?
Pillows are ancient objects, predating ancient Egypt, ancient Greece, and been ubiquitous in the ever-integrating world since. Once upon a time pillows were not soft like they are today. They were frequently constructed of hard materials such as stone, wood or even metal! Imagine laying your head on a stone pillow. Ouch!
Feathers, straw and cotton were eventually used to create softer pillows, which has since helped improve sleep for people. In the Middle Ages, the rich were the only ones who got pillows; poor people had to make do with bags filled with hay or straw.
It wasn’t until the 1800s, with Industrial Revolution advances in textile production making pillows more affordable and accessible, that they became commonplace enough to get washed. It was the machine’s job to make pillows as fast as possible, so all of us could have a big, fluffy one to rest our heads on.

When selecting a pillow or two, consider how you sleep. If you’re a side sleeper, a firm pillow will provide much-needed neck and back support. If you sleep on your back, it would be better to use a medium-firm pillow. If you sleep on your stomach, you need a soft pillow so you don’t hurt your neck.

When you’ve got the right pillow, it’s also important to keep it clean and fluffy. Fluff up your pillow every now and then to help maintain its shape. You can also air out or sun your pillow to freshen it up and kill any dust mites that may be lurking inside.

Ever wonder why it feels so nice to hug a pillow? There’s a science behind it! When we hug a pillow, we produce a hormone called oxytocin that makes us feel happy and relaxed. It’s also why hugging a pillow can help you fall asleep faster and sleep better.
